Technical Skills Training
To ensure our coaches align with these standards, we provide an online course titled “Technical Skills Training for Equestrian Coaches.” Completion of this course is a requirement for all coaches aspiring to be endorsed by SAEF and listed in our Coaches’ Database
The course comprises a series of Zoom-based sessions providing the coaches with a universal language and coaching system for fundamental riding skills, regardless of their future discipline specialization. Conducted by accredited South African Coach Developers with extensive FEI training, these world-class webinars have been crafted under the guidance of renowned coach and coach developer Niall Quirk.
The first level “Technical Skills Training for Equestrian Coaches,” caters to coaches across all equestrian disciplines. It emphasizes that the core training principles for horses should be consistent across disciplines, providing a solid foundation before specialization. Aligned with the FEI’s “Principles of Riding,” the curriculum breathes life into theoretical concepts. Each topic introduces theory, practical training methods, common mistakes, and corrective measures with real-life examples. Presenters enrich the sessions with personal insights and recommendations. Extensive Q&A sessions follow each presentation, offering coaches expert guidance for addressing daily challenges.

Topics encompass the rider’s seat, rider’s aids, basic horse paces, the training scale, basic exercises, and progressive horse training up to Novice level. The series comprises over 20 webinars held every second Tuesday from February to November each year. Participants commit to the entire series due to its progressive nature, as individual session enrolment is not available.
Series I is aimed at any equestrian coach from any discipline. The basic training of horses for any discipline should be identical. Only once the basis has been established have both rider and horse a solid foundation to specialise in the various disciplines available.

SERIES II – TECHNICAL SKILLS TRAINING FOR EQUESTRIAN COACHES
Once the basic training has been completed, rider and horse can then progress to more dressage specific movements. Series II follows the natural progression from Novice up to and including Medium level (in South Africa). The format of the sessions stays the same.
