Social License to Operate

In the context of equestrian sports or any industry, a “social license to operate” refers to the acceptance and approval granted by the surrounding community and society at large for an organization or activity to function in a certain area. It goes beyond legal permits and regulations and encompasses the level of trust, support, and goodwill a sport or organization enjoys from the public and stakeholders.

The concerns raised globally by groups advocating for the closure of equestrian sports and the allegations of unfair treatment and abuse of horses have for quite some time been a topic of discussion and debate within the equestrian community and the broader public. These concerns highlight the importance of addressing animal welfare and ethical practices within equestrian sports.

To address these concerns and maintain the sport’s credibility:

  • Prioritize Animal Welfare: Equestrian sports must prioritize the welfare of horses, including responsible training and riding practices.
  • Regulation and Oversight: Robust regulations and oversight are crucial to prevent abuse and ensure horse welfare.
  • Education: Promote education among equestrians about ethical practices and horse behaviour.
  • Transparency: Be transparent about horse care and conditions during training and competition.
  • Research and Innovation: Support research to improve horse welfare and training methods.
  • Engage Critics: Engage with critics to foster constructive dialogue and collaboration.
  •

In summary, while concerns about horse welfare and ethical treatment in equestrian sports have garnered attention, it is our duty as SAEF to address these issues through education, regulation, transparency, and collaboration with critics. The goal is to ensure that equestrian sports uphold high standards of animal welfare and fairness while allowing the sport to continue as a respected and ethical endeavour.

  • Providing all coaches access to learning opportunities, such as technically correct and inspiring holistic coaching sessions
  • Safeguarding all participants (horse, rider, coach) by setting standards of ethical behaviour and upholding a coaches’ code of conduct
  • Protecting and growing the reputation of equestrian sports, through which we continue to earn our social licence to operate from the public
